Unlike many other novels published in the same era, Wuthering Heights delves deep into the depths of psychological terror with a viallain that is so unscrupolous as to justify the epitath of the embodiment of evil. The story goes in unexpected directions that are all the more baffling given the period it was written in. Emily Brontë was not hesitant to break with conventions and show how far a cruel man who thinks himself wronged can go in order to seek revenge. This results in a plot that has the reader taken aback and out of breath, hoping for the characters dogged by Heathcliff's unequivocal malice to somehow find a way out. The majority of the story is dreary mirroring the merciless weather in Yorkshire.Completely ahead of its time, it is an incredible work of gothic horror that must be read to be believed.
# Wuthering HeightsA monumental attempt at reconciling the quirks of existence, at seeking meaning contained beyond its appearance. That salvation means different things to different people, and that there are just as many ways to seek it, carve it, and just as brazenly "revenge" one's way towards it makes the book intriguing to read through, for there's some bit of darkness inside every one of us that I feel almost anyone sees reflected and reenacted through many "sinners" of characters in the work. The gothic, eerie and at times utterly unearthly settings of the novel makes this exercise of reestablishing and reevaluating this lost connection with the hidden self an enriching and educating experience, that has been fittingly aided by the sublime prose. As a star-crossed love story, it's spectacular, in fact so much so that the spectacle consumed the lovers, every bit of their material and existential well-being. As an interplay of the past, present, the vision of future and the subconscious that underlie them the narrative is masterful and of a lollapalooza kind.
Diese Ausgabe von Emily Brontes Klassiker "Wuthering Heights" ist einfach wunderschön gestaltet. Das Cover ist in einem schlichten Olivegrün gehalten und hat schöne kleine Verzierungen in Gold und Lila. Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf, das Buch zu lesen, da solche literarischen Klassiker bei mir im Englischunterricht leider immer etwas zu kurz gekommen sind. Ich bin immer wieder beeindruckt, wie schön die Barnes and Noble Collectible Editions gestaltet sind und würde sie jedem empfehlen, der auf der Suche nach schönen Büchern ist, die nicht allzu teuer sind (außer es sind die Ausgaben, die schon seit längerem nicht mehr gedruckt werden).
Der Text scheint aus einer anderssprachigen Version maschinenübersetzt ins Englische zu sein. Z.B. steht im ersten Absatz 'united states of america' statt 'country'. Schon das zweite Mal, dass mir das mit dem Top-Ergebnis der Suche vom Kindle aus nach einem public domain - Text passiert ist. Ich werde in Zukunft immer zuerst das Sample runterladen!
"Wuthering Heights in Plain und Simple English" verspricht das Cover, dazu einen Study Guide mit historischem Hintergrundwissen und Biographie.Dieser Study Guide umfasst aber nur wenige Seiten, vielleicht 20% des Buches, und wirkt lieblos zusammengestoppelt wie eine Semesterarbeit im Grundstudium. Die Kurzbiographien von Charlotte und Emily Bronte sind weniger ergiebig als die Texte bei wikipedia, zudem auch noch auf dem Niveau der 1970er, bevor Leute wie Juliet Barker, Lucasta Miller und Edward Chitham intensiver über das Leben der Schwestern forschten und viele der Mythen widerlegt wurden, denn Charlotte hatte ihrer Biographin Elizabeth Gaskell eine sehr melodramatische Version aufgetischt.Ähnlich substanzlos sind die weiteren Beiträge, die nicht über den Ansatz: "in Haworth war nicht viel los und außerdem fand die industrielle Umwälzung bei schlechtem Wetter statt" hinausgehen.Der Großteil des Buches nimmt ein schlecht gesetzter Nachdruck der von Charlotte bearbeiteten 1850er Ausgabe von "Wuthering Heights" ein, hier ist der absolute "Kracher", dass auf dem Vorblatt deshalb Charlotte Bronte als Autorin des Buches steht. Anstatt eines vereinfachten bzw. modernisierten Texts bekommt man also einfach den Originalroman, den man auch als einfache "Classics"-Ausgabe z.B. von Wordsworth für weitaus weniger Geld kaufen kann (und dazu gibt es dann in der Regel auch noch eine besser geschriebene Einleitung).
