Let me be frank from the outset: this one was a difficult read. It wasn't due to the writing or the subject matter, though, admittedly, stories that take place in the midst of war can have varying effects on a reader. No, simply stated, this book does as the author himself reminds us in his note at the end - it reminds us that fiction, like life, reminds us that no one is safe. After five previous books that put Thomas Berrington through various levels of hell, I think, with this sixth, he has finally hit rock bottom.This book runs the gamut from cozy family scenes at home to gory, bloody scenes on the battlefield. We reunite with old friends and we meet new people, including Richard Woodville, Earl Rivers, brother to Elizabeth of York, Queen of England. Thomas continues to straddle the line between his loyalty to al-Andalus and his need to protect his family by throwing in his lot with Fernando and Isabel. As he runs hither and yon to solve his latest murder, we, as the spectators, have no choice but to notice that Judgment Day has now officially arrived. The outcome is all too real yet, in its own way, completely surprising.If you haven't read the previous books, you should not start with this one. You will not understand the majority of the events, especially the ending, if you do. As for my fellow readers who have been following Thomas from the start, know that this book signals a shift in Thomas. We see it throughout the book but the ending is clear. I've always liked the character of Thomas Berrington - a battle-hardened physician who could compartimentalize with the best. Now, though, I am highly curious whether the physician will survive over the soldier.The Fortunate Dead has action, murder, intrigue, and chaos - the perfect story for a rainy day. Just be sure to bring some Kleenex for the end.
Thomas Berrington is by far my favorite 4th century physician and I continue to enjoy the series. There are some surprising turns in The Fortunate Dead that will possibly upset you, but you need to start reading to find out if that is the case. Have fun!
I have enjoyed the Thomas Berrington series from the first. However, when I saw David Penny after the publication of book five, I told him I now wanted more emotional depth from the character. I hoped David would put more of himself in the book, making both himself and Thomas more vulnerable. He responded that book six would not disappoint, and it didn't.In addition, as the series approaches the year 1492, the sense of dread for Thomas and his family-of-choice inexorably increases. History tells us what happened, but we hope somehow our beloved characters will escape.In short, this series becomes more engaging as it continues.
This book was suggested in a search about books related to Edward UP of England and his wife, Isobel. I had no warning that this book had several proceeding it, so found it very confusing with so little explication about the characters. &their combined histories. The writing is rather sparse and flat. I would recommend it only to those familiar with the series, and younger readers at that.
I don’t want to talk too much about this book because I am afraid of giving away some secrets. This book features a fast paced story that I couldn’t put down. Ma y of the place names and people names are real figures and the story takes place in a real time and location.
